Marketing has been part of our lives for quite some time now, which is great for us! It means that while Marketing is constantly changing and updating, there are still some truths that can be learned from other marketers and their experiences.

Whether you’re brand new to the game or a seasoned marketer, below are our top 5 book recommendations you need on your shelf to help you celebrate World Book Day, while improving your marketing efforts.

To kick off with this book, let me give you a quick reminder of the mythology around Icarus, the son of Daedalus. Both Icarus and his father were thrown into prison for disobeying the King. To escape prison, Daedalus crafted wax wings to ensure the two could escape from prison.

These wax wings came with a warning; Icarus was warned not to fly too close to the sun, as the wax would melt. Icarus ignored the warning and fell to his death.

This story of remembering to be cautious and not “flying too close to the sun” seems to have been ingrained in humanity ever since. In this book, Seth Godin is asking his readers to think again when approaching their marketing tactics. He encourages his readers to think outside the box and push the limits.

In this book, Professor Douglas B. Holt writes about what marketers need to understand in order to communicate an authentic brand that resonates with users. Holt looks at famous brands and gives marketers tips on how to craft a brand identity that connects and becomes part of potential customers.

In The Undoing Project, Michael Lewis looks at the psychology behind decision-making. Michael Short, responsible for The Big Short and Moneyball, focuses a story about two Israeli Psychologists who collaborated on ground-breaking psychological research on the human mind and decision-making.

Their research essentially became the basis of behavioral economics. Behavioral economics is a fundamental theory that economics is less based on rational decisions, but is subject to very much the human condition of systematic biases, emotions, cultural and social factors. Understanding the human psyche is fundamental in producing strong marketing campaigns.

What better way to follow Michael Lewis’ book, than to read Misbaving by Richard Thaler? Marketers need to understand how consumers think and Thaler covers this topic in his book. Consumers think irrationally. Use this to your advantage.

Nike is an iconic brand. If you don’t know the checkmark logo, you probably have been living under a rock for the past several years. Phil Knight’s memoir, Shoe Dog, is filled with lessons not just how to build a brand vision, but how to live it. Knight’s book is a case study on how to put marketing theories into use.
